Reopening the Past, Reopening the Dream
Don Stone Jr Contemporary Art (DSJCA) is pleased to present the first of two preview exhibitions, Reopening the Past, Reopening the Dream. A group show, it highlights the work of three talented photographers: Alan Anderson, Jim Fox, and the late Kevin Higgins and also showcases the beautiful photomontage of the late Steven Blevins. Their work was specifically chosen to embody the two themes we wish to explore, reopening the past and reopening the dream.
A second look at some of the best work by Steven Blevins and Kevin Higgins enables us to reopen their dream of having their work live on and speak to a 21st century audience. It also reopens the gallery’s past as they were both represented by DSJCA in the early 80’s. As we revisit the two specific events captured by Alan Anderson (the installation of The Gates in Central Park in 2005) and Jim Fox (San Francisco’s Gay Pride celebration, c. 1998) we venture into the dreams of others. Christo & Jeanne-Claude’s dream of “wrapping Central Park” is chronicled by Alan Anderson’s remarkable photographs. Jim Fox’s notable images give us a portal to people living the dream of being out and proud, quite fitting at the moment as June is national Gay Pride Month.
The past has been reopened by the work on exhibit and the dream of a venue for challenging, thought provoking, contemporary art has been made real by reopening DSJCA. We can learn about ourselves by examining the past. Perhaps we can learn even more about ourselves by examining our dreams.
